I READ H.J. Greaves letter in the Telegraph on Friday 11 July and have to say what a stark contrast to what happened in Sheffield.
Our previous council did the opposite and gave the airport operators Peel & Co the land for just £1, a loss of £millions obtained under very strange circumstances. Could it be that the council were only interested in the outcome of a planning applica
tion to develop Business Units at the expense of a vital asset which the city first considered having 80 years ago.
The airline Mr. Greaves travelled with was Air Southwest based at Plymouth Airport with a shorter runway than Sheffield, using Dash8 50 seater aircraft, which, contrary to what Peel's Deputy Chief Executive Neil Pakey says, can operate out of Sheffield. They did so with full loads on the Jersey summer services and also on the three times daily Sabena Airlines Services to Brussels. Mr. Greaves also mentions the constant stream of internal flights to destinations all over the UK out of Newquay. This is what Sheffield Airport was built for, not the so called low-cost or bucket and spade brigade.
Let us see what our new council is made of and get the airport back up and running from the unscrupulous property developers (there are always ways and means), and give our citizens and business people the services they need and that were deliberately withheld before by the airport operators.
What is a "fiver" extra on the ticket price when you don't have to pay taxi fares of £80 or more and you are saving the planet unnecessary CO2 car journeys.
