WHY does the catering manager at the City Hall sell crisps, hula hoops and other noisy items at classical concerts?
We attended the first concert of the International Season. It was as though Beethoven had added parts to the ninth symphony for voluntary audience participation.

We expressed our concern at the resulting disturbance to two very courteous young
gentlemen at the kiosk, but this was rather like shooting the messenger. We write to you because we are concerned at the decline in standards of behaviour at some public events and because we are sure that other concert goers feel as we do. We wish to enjoy the music on the programme without the distractions of others.
