I am writing in response to the letter from Toby Mallinson, expressing fears about additional "school run" traffic at Malin Bridge when all the children over the age of eleven in the current catchment areas of Wisewood and Myers Grove move to a new state-of-the-art secondary school at Wood Lane.

He lives at Malin Bridge, equidistant from the two schools, between a third and ha
lf a mile's walk from either. For many of the children in the Malin Bridge Primary catchment area, it is actually a shorter distance to Wood Lane.

Indeed, Malin Bridge was a feeder school to Myers Grove for many years.
For pupils living at Wisewood, the distance to be walked is about the same as for many children who walk across Rivelin Valley from Walkley, often up and down much steeper hills. There is no reason for them to be transported by car.

In other parts of Walkley Ward pupils are transported by special school buses up the hill to Tapton and King Edwards. I am sure that similar arrangements can be put in place for students living at Wadsley. I do not remember reading any Council report saying that traffic at Malin Bridge would double, and indeed there is no need for this to happen if the majority of pupils, who will be aged eleven to eighteen, walk to school. I hope that a new crossing will be provided across Loxley Road at the bottom of Hallowmoor Road and a new footway across the River Loxley to bypass the bottom of Stannington Road to ensure a safe and pleasant walk to school.

I want to see all the children in Sheffield 6 benefiting from the wonderful new educational facilities that many Sheffield children already enjoy; with extensive playing fields and a brisk 15 – 30 minutes' walk each day, they should be physically fit as well as stretched intellectually.
