I AM writing to support Graeme Wroe's remarks concerning access between Park Hill and Sheaf Street via the Midland railway station.
Read more: We must fight for station accessIf East Midlands Trains plc are intent on closing the through-way, then they should be work
ing with Railtrack and possibly other land owning parties involved to provide at least two safe, well-designed, pleasing-to-the-eye bridges for pedestrians and cyclists either side of the station.
This company has continued to show little real understanding or regard "for the comfort and safety of passengers" (as their constant, annoyingly, discomfortingly repeated announcements put it). Barriers would, of course, strengthen that impression as well as reinforce our roles as "being guilty"/errant in our ways. And there was I thinking we can think for ourselves. Bit dangerous that, because it means the likes of East Midlands Rail plc and a ??? writer's handwriting illegible of thousands of security culture metal barriers can't control us as much as they obviously want to.
Most people using the startion either want to catch a train or tram or, yes, get between Park Hill and Sheaf Street. If East Midlands Trains plc's security staff (that's the public address system on permanent loop-replay) or British Transport Police can't weed out wrongdoers then why should we have any respect for them?
Thus, they are creating a them and us, unrelaxed, tense atmosphere in and around the station.
If East Midlands Trains plc don't change their ways then we can only hope they are replaced, sooner than the bridges.
