I AM writing concerning the planning application to build wind turbines at Sheephouse Heights, near Penistone.
The turbines will be visible over a wide area and Angela Smith, the Hillsborough MP says "I do not believe we have to destroy the environment in order to save the environment".
This is an extremely uneven comparison. For a start, she seems to ass
ume that because the turbines could be seen, they would spoil the view. You cannot measure these things, but wind farms do not have to be regarded as ugly. Note there are a lot of man-made structures in the Peak District itself, including many attractive villages. The tower on Emley Moor is very high and visible but provides an interesting landmark.
Against this, there is an absolute and urgent need to mitigate climate change. The worst effects of this will occur in other countries a few decades in the future but our actions now will directly affect them. UN scientists predict that without urgent action, conditions will make human life effectively unsustainable in many countries. The UK will suffer less but the Sheffield floods last year could still end up seeming a relatively minor event.
Building windfarms is one of the most positive (or least painful, depending on your point of view) measures that local councils have proposed.
