I READ with interest Coun Peter Price's letter in the Sheffield Telegraph on September 19, praising the contribution provided by Sheffield MP Richard Caborn to sport in Britain and our recent Olympic successes.
Richard also deserves special praise for his contribution to charity and for his dedicated support for Macmillan in recent years. Richard ran his first ever sponsored race for our charity in 2002 when he took part in the Sheffield Half Marathon and r
aised over £25,000 to help fund the 18 bed Macmillan Palliative Care Unit at the Northern General Hospital.
On the eve of his 65th birthday, Richard ran his last sponsored race as an MP by taking part in the Great North Run 2008 on Sunday. He will also celebrate 25 years in Parliament, during which time he became longest serving Sports Minister.
Richard's efforts will help us to fund over £600,000 of new services in Sheffield this year. They will certainly help us reach many more people in Sheffield whose lives are affected by cancer. We think that are very worthy of support and hope that your readers feel the same?
If anyone would like to make a donation to Richard's Birthday Run and help Macmillan provide more medical, financial, emotional and practical support to local people with cancer – then please call us on 01246 810301 or email: sloane@macmillan.org.uk
Thank you in advance for your generosity
