Whilst congratulating the Telegraph as it tries to stimulate debate about the new car park on Arundel Gate, such a debate unfortunately can have no influence upon the design of the car park as it has already been built.
So on this occasion I can offer only one cheer for the Telegraph's initiative and hope that in future it will encourage comment and discussion before there is another fait accompli.
On the other hand I do wish to offer three hearty cheers for Harr
y Dakin and the views he expressed about the Velocity Tower in his recent letter to you (Telegraph August 8). He expressed his thoughts very robustly but I share all of his sentiments.
In particular I'm also puzzled about the city centre's skyline. Doesn't it depend upon where your viewpoint is? I see a totally different view of the centre from Ringinglow than I do from the railway station, say.
And where does the city centre begin and end? I welcome the development in the Heart of the City but for me the centre starts as I cross the ring road at Moorfoot.
However, the real issue for me is the tower itself. As I have watched it being constructed I have thought that at last there would be an eye-catching tower in the city of which it could be proud and which would compare with those in other northern cities.
And to my admittedly untutored eye, as I approach the Tower along Ecclesall Road it seems that its present beauty can only be significantly enhanced if it were to rise to 36 storeys. At the moment it looks stunted, additional height would create a slimmer, more elegant structure and one that could be better appreciated precisely because it is some distance from the Heart of the City development.
