WITH reference to the article "Two hour trains to London" (July 4) and the letter from Valerie Bayliss (June 27), I have checked up on the advertised schedules from Sheffield to London, and for five other cities similar distances from the capital.
By sheer chance I was also able to find the schedules for exactly ten years ago as I happen to have the all region timetable for 1998. It is important to bear in mind that these speeds are for the 'standard' trains, neither the fastest nor the slowest on each route.

The present speeds (1998 in brackets) to London are:
Doncaster 94mph (98mph), Manchester 84mph (74mph), Liverpool 78mph (71mph), Leeds 77mph (77mph), Birmingham 77mph (73mph) and, finally, Sheffield 66mph (71mph). If a two hour schedule from Sheffield were achieved the speed would be 82mph.

I think the figures speak for themselves.

Incidentally the schedule for the services from Sheffield to London on a Sunday (especially the morning) are an absolute disgrace, and always have been. It takes well over 3hours. If we ever go down to London on a Sunday we generally travel from Retford, 1hr 45min and free on-street parking!
