THE new leadership of Sheffield City Council, Paul Scriven and John Mothersole, are sending all the right messages to both business and the citizens of Sheffield.
They say they are "listening'' ...they are not going to make mistakes (indeed they are apologising for mistakes that have been made) and they see a bright and shiny future for the Steel City .
I never subscribed to the king's new clothes approach
to the previous regime . 'Tell them how wonderful things are often enough and they will believe you' was not for me and I think the city has made some appalling errors in the last 10 years. It is also amazing how many people are brought in from elsewhere...mess about with the city and then move on and leave us proper Sheffielders to mop up!
Some of the inner city living high rise is monstrous and WILL be tomorrow's slums. When will people realise that you cannot raise a family in a high rise?
The buildings are crammed together and are of poor design and the developers haven't exactly put quality workmanship at the top of the agenda have they?
The saddest thing of all though is the dire shortage of public domain in Sheffield city centre. There is virtually none left and I think that this will really put people off Sheffield in the years ahead.
Anyone who visits a city that really is 'of significance' New York, Barcelona, Paris, Valencia, will see that there are lots of open spaces for people to enjoy
Sheffield has maybe one, although if you look at a picture of the Peace Gardens from the 60s they were much prettier then .
The city centre is not a nice place anymore. Arundel Gate has been turned into a dark and dismal cellar. I suggest that we have too many buildings now and we ought to emphasise more public green space. There are already too many empty buildings, anyway.
Is it too radical to scrap the Sevenstone project and create a fantastic "central park?"
The suburbs have been ignored for too long with far too much emphasis on the city centre and Coun Scriven will ignore that at his peril.
Ugly picture in a beautiful frame . . . it is at the moment.
