DRIVINH down Carlisle St S4, my attention was drawn to some very attractive banners hanging from street lamps proclaiming "We're keeping Sheffield Clean".
Brightly coloured pictures of smiling workmen with brushes in hand. Not just one banner, about 10 of them.
Then as I turned into Newhall Road I was staggered to see a disgusting build-up of litter and grime just underneath the bridge.
Travellin
g towards the stadium it didn't get any better and on closer inspection in various parts of Sheffield throughout the day and then the week (as I became more obsessed) I came to the conclusion that the money for the banners would have been better spent on someone actually keeping Sheffield clean.
The irony is that Sir Bob Kerslake, who has just moved onward and upward to rapturous praise from his colleagues, must be blissfully unaware of what he has left behind.
As I understand it, Sir Bob lives in Broomhall and it has to be said that since he has been in Sheffield the route from Broomhall to the Town Hall and from the town hall to the train station has been transformed.
It must be fantastic for all the councillors and highly paid officers in the Town Hall to look out of their windows and see the Peace Gardens, Winter Garden etc in all their glory and perhaps they think that the rest of Sheffield is just like this.
The trouble is that areas like Darnall, Tinsley, Attercliffe, Hillsborough are scruffy.
I understand the council getting the city centre right and thats fine by me. But as usual we are being duped into thinking we've never had it so good and there is still a massive amount of work to do .
The posters just make me angry.
I don't want one officer who earns over £50,000 a year, please give me three roadsweepers at £15 ,000 and the whole of Sheffield will be a far more attractive place.
