LIKE Angela Cooper, I am not only against Government policy that is forcing the closure of local Post Offices, but also not supportive of a policy that means that local councils have no control over the cost, routing and timings of local bus routes.
I agree with Mrs Cooper. I would love to see the local 201 bus route restored but under present Government rules, the city council has no legal powers to stop local bus companies making commercial decisions without taking into account wider social re
sponsibilities. The powers of both the city council and the Passenger Transport Authority at South Yorkshire level really are limited in this respect.
However, local people can be assured that just as we are standing up for local Post Offices, we will stand up for local people regarding the buses issue. We want re-regulation of buses so that we can have a direct say in fares and routes. The elderly lady that Mrs Cooper saw struggling up the hill in Crookes would then get her bus service returned so she doesn't have to keep struggling just to get to the shops.
