I WAS delighted to read (September 26) that Sheffield has been awarded Gold in the Britain in Bloom competition. It is a great achievement on the part of many people.
The city centre has never looked better and I have been particularly impressed by the way the displays have stood up to the wet summer and by the fact that how, in late September, they are still looking so good.

Although it is impossible to apport
ion praise to any one group of people, I do feel that special thanks are due to the dawn patrol of gardeners who go round while the city sleeps to do all the watering. I do wonder if they are paid for all the hours they put in.

The entire team deserves our thanks and I would like to think that they will be invited by the Lord Mayor for a celebratory cup of tea in the Town Hall – preferably arriving by open-top bus!
