I HAVE recently read two articles about women and children trafficked into the UK sex trade.
One was the in journal of Anti-Slavery International, the other a report in The Independent of July 3. In both articles, one specific city was mentioned - Sheffield - where the women and children end up in massage parlours.

I cannot recall ever s
eeing a report in the Sheffield Telegraph relating to this trade. Assuming prosecutions take place, why are they not reported? Why are we apparently so unconcerned that there are trafficked women and children forced to work in Sheffield?

Finally, I would mention a report in The Independent of July 5 stating that "the Turkish Government set up a well-publicised hotline for reporting trafficking. In six months, three-quarters of the tip-offs came from prostitutes' clients, and those calls resulted in the destruction of 10 trafficking networks and freedom of 100 women from coercion."
Why are the police in Sheffield not doing something like this? Or, if they are, why is it not being reported?

It is is slightly bewildering that there have been few prosecutions for sex trafficking despite numerous reports and features in the media.
The regional TV programme -Calendar - recently claimed that South Yorkshire was a hotbed of sex-slavery but provided little hard evidence.
