73 paintings in 24 hours challenge - VIDEO

YORKSHIRE conservation group The Rivers' Movement has sought to raise awareness of climate change by setting itself a variety of 24-hour challenges.

Group leader Brian Lewis, aged 73, set the ball rolling when he decided to celebrate his time on the planet by painting 73 pieces of art in a 24-hour period, all with a theme of conservation.

Brian, a writer from Barnsley, said: 'Throughout our lives we generate a carbon footprint. No matter how old or how young we are, we can all make a difference to improve our environment.

"Everybody thinks pensioners like me just travel on buses free, but I want to show that guys of my age still have a lot to say and a lot to contribute."

Brian began his '24-hour moot' at 10.15am at a gallery in Barnsley town centre and worked straight through the day and night to get the job done.

The theme for his many pictures was sustainability, climate change and the environment.

He was joined in his challenge by other members of The Rivers' Movement who all undertook similar challenges directly related to their ages.

Reinhold Behringer, 46, a Professor of Creative Technology at Leeds Met, produced 46 live improvisations on 46 different instruments using a computer-controlled synthesiser and samplers.

John Cowan, 50, a picture framer, framed 50 paintings.

Rob Hindle, 46, created 46 poems, and teacher Helen Mesezaros, 42, compiled 42 letters of complaint.

Jack Aston-Booth, 23, a painter with academic qualifications on the effects of climate on migration birds, produced drawings of 23 birds which are affected by climate change.

"My young mate over here with the birds has only got to do 23, while I'm stuck here all night producing 73," laughed pensioner Brian. "It seems wrong doesn't it?"

The 24 Hour Moot challenge forms part of a month-long exhibition and arts workshop programme organised by the River Dearne Project.
