A life on the ocean waves for retirement village residents

AHOY there!

Residents of a Sheffield retirement village are set for sunshine, sand and sailing when they take part in a challenge programme in Greece later this month.

Following in the waves of Britain's Olympic sailing stars, six residents of Brunswick Gardens retirement village in Woodhouse will spend a week on the island of Levkas learning how to master the basics.

Instructors from Neilson Active Holidays will teach the novice group how to sail their own 32ft yacht as part of a flotilla of 10 vessels.

The challenge for the 40 shipmates, aged up to 91, is to team up and sail alone.

They could also be in the running for a Royal Yachting Association sailing certificate and a celebration medal from the ExtraCare Charitable Trust - the charity which has organised the trip.

Lance Bosmans, Brunswick Gardens village manager, said: "ExtraCare is supporting the trip as part of its 20th year celebrations - every participant was carefully selected for their enthusiasm to learn and I'm thrilled so many of our Sheffield residents have been chosen."
