Airport fight goes to Brussels
CAMPAIGNERS who fought to save Sheffield City Airport have taken their fight for a public inquiry to Brussels.
Members of Sheffield City Airport Movement - SCAM - travelled to the Belgian capital this week to present their case to the European Parliament's Committee on Petitions.
Sheffield Council has refused to hold a public inquiry into the circumstances of the airport's closure and a deal allowing Peel to retain ownership of the site for just 1. SCAM is now appealing for the European Union to intervene because it paid for infrastructure around the airport.
Stewart Dalton, of Westfield, gave a 10-minute speech, outlining the airport's demise after scheduled flights were withdrawn in 2002.
He concluded: "We would like the airport to be re-opened, failing that we would like a full, open and public, enquiry into the events leading up to its closure and sale."
