Arctic Monkey's sound investment
SOME Arctic Monkey business is coming to the Devonshire Quarter next weekend.
Members of the Sheffield band are underlining their commitment to their home city with a venture starting on Saturday, September 20, in Devonshire Street.
An acoustic bar and lounge and streetwear shop are backed by drummer Matt Helder and former bass player Andy Nicholson.
They are launching The Bowery opposite the West One plaza.
Arctics' frontman Alex Turner is expected to be among the celebrity guests, joining DJ Zane Lowe and TV presenter Alexa Chung.
After singing the praises of Sheffield in their meteoric rise, members of the band are doing their bit in terms of investment.
The 200 capacity bar will host live acoustic sessions, quiz nights and DJ sets, with occasional national and international guests dropping in for unannounced gigs.
It will be owned and managed by Andy Nicholson working alongside Threads club night owner James O'Hara and Michael Dean, manager of DQ.
Andy is currently part of indie superband Mongrel, alongside Matt Helders, Reverend and the Makers' Jon McClure and Babyshambles bassist Drew McConnell.
The mix for the Devonshire Street development includes a store selling designs by 'Supremebeing' – limited edition clothing and accessories designed to "sate the most devoted fashion or music lover's craving".
It is the first franchise headed by Matt Helder.
The team at the Bowery – named after an area of New York – are looking to support local businesses and emerging musical talent, creating the atmosphere of a "local boozer" in the process.
Andy said: "I've always wanted to have my own bar – I'm sure most people would if they could. I've always wanted a business and if you're going to put your money into something, why not do it with friends, into something so sociable?"
