Pupils at Birkdale Senior School met the fourth man on the moon when Captain Alan Bean come to talk to them. He recalled his first flight into space aged 37 as lunar module pilot on Apollo 12 which was man’s second lunar landing, in November 1969. He told them: “Keep working hard towards your goal. No one ever expected that I would fly to the moon but I worked hard to achieve it.”
