Boy lucky to escape serious injury in Peak fall
MOUNTAIN rescuers say a ten-year-old Sheffield boy was lucky to escape more serious injury after falling 20 feet on rocks in the Peak District.
The youngster was walking with his family on Burbage Rocks around noon on Sunday when he suffered head injuries in the accident.
Members of Edale Mountain Rescue Team were quickly on scene, followed by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
The boy was strapped to a spinal board before being carried to the helicopter to be taken to the Children's Hospital.
"It later transpired that he had suffered a fractured jaw but he had undoubtedly been lucky not to have been even more seriously injured," said a rescue team spokesman.
The team had a busy weekend. They were asked to join the search for a 94-year-old woman in Hoyland near Barnsley in the early hours of Sunday after she was reported missing by a neighbour. The woman was found safe and well by a motorist.
On Sunday afternoon the team helped a 57-year-old woman from Nottingham who had blown off her feet, suffering a broken ankle, on Back Tor to the east of the Derwent reservoir. A spokesman said: "As luck would have it an Edale team member was nearby, together with some of her colleagues from the Chesterfield Royal Hospital A&E department!" Two air ambulances were forced to turn back due to bad weather but rescuers battled high winds to carry the walker to an ambulance.
