THE centenary of the first buses on Sheffield roads - between Broomhill and Lodge Moor - is being marked this month.

First, the region’s biggest bus operator, is painting two of its vehicles in the former liveries of Sheffield Corporation, which ran buses in the city for most of the last century.

One will be in 1913 livery and the other in 1960 livery, taking the modern day 51 route from the city centre through Broomhill to Lodge Moor.

A bus rally, featuring old and new vehicles and include a charity bus pull, will be held at First’s Olive Grove depot on Sunday, May 12.

Giles Fearnley, managing director of First UK Bus, whose grandfather, Arthur Fearnley, was the general manager for Sheffield Corporation Tramways from 1904 to 1936,

said: “It is only right and proper that we organise a series of events to commemorate this anniversary and the public should look out for these spectacular buses that represent the history of this great city.”

Celebrations are being arranged with the help of local transport historians and enthusiasts.

The first Sheffield bus service was launched on February 15, 1913, with the aim of supplementing the trams that ran across the city.
