Call for verdict on moves to tackle road congestion
CHANGES are being lined up to improve traffic flows at the "congestion hotspot" of Meadowhead roundabout.
Public consultation starts today on a raft of proposed alterations at a bottleneck on one of the main routes into and out of Sheffield.
The package includes:
- Widening the approach lanes;
- Reshaping the roundabout;
- Filling in the pedestrian subways and replacing them with surface level crossings;
- Introducing traffic lights at the top of Greenhill Avenue and Dyche Lane.
The area is used by around 51,000 vehicles every day and the council says delays can be caused because of the narrow lanes and layout of the roundabout.
Coun Ian Auckland, cabinet member for sustainable transport, said: "We want to make everyone's journey smoother so are looking to tackle this congestion hotspot head on."
The first phase of the project will concentrate on approaches from Bochum Parkway, Chesterfield Road South and changes to the roundabout itself, with work due to start next year.
Local residents, businesses and people travelling through Meadowhead are being encouraged to give their views on the area around Meadowhead roundabout and Abbey Lane.
The proposals do not include installing traffic lights on the roundabout itself but new or improved pedestrian crossings are designed to help manage the number of vehicles approaching the roundabout from each direction.
A second scheme is also being consulted upon which involves the re-introduction of a separate left-turn lane from Meadowhead on to Abbey Lane.
Coun Auckland said: "The proposals are in direct response to local residents' comments. We have listened to what people have told us about the original scheme and these proposals are in direct response to that."
The strategy aims to reduce journey times for all vehicles through the junction and improve the routes around the roundabout for pedestrians and cyclists.
