Casino raises the stakes with a move next door

OWNERS of a Sheffield casino are gambling on a £4.5m move next door.

The Grosvenor Casino at the corner of Duchess Road and Queens Road is closing next month, reopening the following week as G Casino in the former Mecca Bingo premises.

The new building will be open 24 hours a day from December 9, designed not only to offer a "state-of-the-art" casino but also a venue for live entertainment and a restaurant.

Creating an additional 50 jobs, it will be the tenth casino in the UK operated under the brand which is owned by Grosvenor Casinos, part of the Rank Group.

The 23,500 sq ft casino will have ten gaming tables, 33 electronic gaming terminals, 24 jackpot slot machines and a 100-seat poker room.

A lounge will screen sporting events and will have a stage for live entertainment.

There will be a cocktail lounge and a 62-seater restaurant, The Gallery, which will serve a Mediterranean influenced menu.

General manager Ian Turver said: "The G brand is all about giving people a great alternative for a night out and the new Sheffield casino does just that.

"It differs from the Grosvenor Casino in that we'll be putting as much emphasis on the non-gaming activities such as the live entertainment and the restaurant as we will the gaming.

"This means the new venue will appeal to many different types of people whether they've been to a casino before or not. And, of course, the environment makes all the difference. The new G Casino will have a modern, contemporary look and feel."

Mr Turver added: "We're working hard to remove some of those barriers often associated with casinos and believe the new venue offers a fun and friendly atmosphere which will be welcomed by the people of Sheffield."

The former Mecca Bingo building, also owned by Rank, has been empty since March 2007. Once the casino has relocated, the company is looking to sub-let it.
