Clegg to face protesters

DEPUTY Prime Minister Nick Clegg is in Sheffield for conferences with civic and business leaders tomorrow - but he will also be met by left wing opponents and trade unionists protesting about Government cuts.

The Sheffield Hallam MP will meet with Sheffield Council leader Paul Scriven, chief executive John Mothersole, Brightside and Hillsborough MP David Blunkett and managers from the city's public, private and voluntary organisations for the Sheffield First Partnership leadership summit.

The meeting will be held at St Paul's Mercure Hotel, where delegates will discuss progress on the council's strategy to improve the city between 2010 and 2020.

Topics for debate are set to include improving public transport, cultural diversity, maintaining Sheffield's 'green city' reputation and continuing the ongoing regeneration.

Sheffield Council's Lib Dem leader Coun Paul Scriven, who is chairman of Sheffield First Partnership, said: "Sheffield is a city that has ambition and it is important over the next decade that we continue to deliver a more enterprising society with more local jobs.

"There is no doubt there will be challenges ahead as public finances are squeezed, but we are listening to people's own priorities so we can ensure the city is in the best possible position to benefit from future opportunities at a community and individual level."

Sheffield First Partnership director Sharon Squires added: "Sheffield has a community spirit that we want to build on while we improve the business and economic prospects for the city as well as the social and environmental aspects. Our consultation demonstrates that people are very clear and have definite views on what they want from their city.

"This is a tough period for the economy and we need to be constructive. This is the chance for those in positions of influence to really listen to the suggestions made by people of Sheffield to see what we can all do with our resources to make the city a better place to live, work and play."

Mr Clegg's second event will be at Sheffield Town Hall to launch a new council service to help city businesses.

Sheffield Trades Union Council has organised a protest demonstration at 5.15pm.

Secretary Bill Ronksley said: "It will be in opposition to the attacks being made on jobs, education, the NHS and other essential social services by the Conservative-Lib Dem Government."
