Clegg to open new hospital unit

HALLAM MP and Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg will join nationally acclaimed leukaemia experts next week to officially open the Royal Hallamshire Hospital's new haematology unit.

The unit's life-saving equipment and improved facilities were partly funded by 420,000 from the Sheffield Leukaemia and Blood Disorders Appeal.

The appeal was backed by the Sheffield Hospitals Charitable Trust and was launched by Sheffield actor Sean Bean in 2007. It shot past its target of 150,000.

Josh Wright, consultant haematologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "We have been overwhelmed by the level of support from patients, families and local residents.

"With the support of the trust and charity we can now offer excellent facilities for patients undergoing therapies for all types of blood disorders.

"As a sign of the success of this development the haematology unit has recently become one of the UK centres with international accreditation for the management of bone marrow transplants."

Prof Alejandro Madrigal, scientific director of the Anthony Nolan Trust and Dr Antonio Pagliuca, President of the British Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, will officially open the unit on Friday next week.
