Families are invited to take part in a day of adventures at the Wild Wood Experience on the Longshaw Estate near Sheffield.

The event will take place on Thursday, August 13, when there will be a host of activities for children.

Children and adults will be able to wander through the secret places of Longshaw guided by a map and markers.

They will be challenged to take part in outdoor activities, help the rangers out with some woodland conservation work and join in camp fire sessions.

Activities include cooking in the mud kitchen, exploring woodland wildlife, toasting treats on camp-fires, tackling the ladder challenge high up in the trees and completing team challenges.

Organisers say it will be a jam-packed day of fun for all ages.

The event is being run by a group of charities: the National Trust, the Eastern Moors Partnership - made up of the National Trust & RSPB - the Grindleford and Eyam Playgroup, which runs a regular forest school session in Grindleford and the Transition Hope Valley group.

This is the third annual Wild Wood Experience event.

The scheme was launched by the Eastern Moors Partnership two years ago in Curbar Woods.

National Trust visitor experience Officer Jody Vallance said: “We are really excited to be working together to create this magical event at Longshaw.

“At the moment there is a lot of woodland work happening across the Longshaw Estate and wider areas in the Peak District, making better habitats for birds and other important wildlife.

“It’s great to have an event where we can share the reasons for these changes to our local woodlands, and look at the value of the woods as important places to cherish and look after, as well as places to explore and go wild in.”

The event is based on a short 2.5km loop starting at the tea room at Longshaw.

It runs from 10.30am to 3.30pm next Thursday.

Tickets for adults and children are £5 and under 5s go free.

The main route is largely accessible although there are some off-road short-cuts.

Booking is highly recommended. Call 01433 637904.
