Coming soon? New future for grand old cinema
THE former Adelphi cinema in Attercliffe has been put on the market.
The grade II listed building off Attercliffe Road is being sold through London firm Paramount Investments for £220,000, although “unconditional offers are invited”.
Local business people hope a sale will bring the old picture house back into use to help spur the regeneration of the east end of Sheffield.
Property developer David Slater of Spaces Sheffield, whose firm has offices and shops in Attercliffe, said: “For a buyer it would be an opportunity to add to the area’s leisure offer, change the landscape in Attercliffe and enhance Sheffield’s cultural credentials.
“The building is certainly of great architectural and historical merit and is the Grand Old Lady of the suburb. It would be ideal for redevelopment. The old Burton building next door is also a great building and that’s for sale, too.”
Mr Slater said there has been local interest in the building, including using it as a venue for Asian weddings.
The red-brick and terracotta building opened as a picture house, with an auditorium for 1,350 people, in 1920. The Adelphi remained a cinema until 1976, then became a bingo hall until the mid-1990s when it was converted into a nightclub. It has been empty since 2006.
The council sees the redevelopment of the Adelphi and the area in front as a key element of its Attercliffe Action Plan.
