Detective arrest in fraud probe

A SOUTH Yorkshire police detective inspector has been arrested on suspicion of money laundering and fraud.

The Star understands DI Shakeel Ahmed, who serves with Doncaster CID, was quizzed at Wood Street police station in Wakefield after his arrest on Wednesday, along with nine other suspects.

He was arrested during a series of raids on homes and businesses in Wakefield on Wednesday morning during which police uncovered 150,000 in cash, a large amount of jewellery and a suspected cannabis farm.

The operation took place in the Agbrigg area of the city where DI Ahmed is believed to live.

Detectives also discovered 14 top-of-the range cars abandoned behind a car wash including a Maserati, a BMW X5 and a Jaguar XKR.

DI Paul O'Dowd from West Yorkshire Police said the vehicles and the other items had been seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act. He said nine men and one woman were taken to the police station for questioning.

DI Ahmed, who serves with South Yorkshire Police, has refused to comment.South Yorkshire Police said it couldn't comment on another force's investigation.

All 10 suspects have been released on bail pending further inquiries and the investigation is ongoing.
