Diane fights the tears torun for her sister-in-law

A SHEFFIELD woman completed the Race for Life just hours after her sister-in-law died from lung cancer.

Diane Simpson got the devastating news that Ingrid Heathcote had lost her battle on Sunday morning, as she prepared to take part in the event which raises money for Cancer Research.

Her brother Paul and other friends and family urged her to continue to take part and she took to the streets for the five kilometre afternoon race in Ingrid's memory.

Diane, aged 52, said: "I cried all the way round but thinking of her and the brave battle she fought kept me going until the finish line. I wrote her name on my badge pinned to my back and I know she would be very proud that I did it."

Diane was also taking part in the event in celebration of her sister Geraldine, who has recently returned to work after receiving chemotherapy for ovarian cancer.

"I signed up because they were both battling cancer at the time," said Diane, who lives in Handsworth.

"I did the race for both of them – in memory of Ingrid and in celebration of Geraldine. She wanted to do it with me but she wasn't up to it after suffering a chest infection.

"She's determined to do it with me next year, though, and I will keep doing it year after year for Ingrid."

Ingrid was a 63-year-old mother-of-two and grandmother-of-one who lived in Harthill.

Diane said: "She was a beautiful woman. She was always there for everyone whenever they needed her and she would always put others first. We will never forget her."
