Dog charity's day at the races

THREE-legged dogs and a mixed bag of crossbreeds had their moment of glory on a South Yorkshire racetrack.

Sleek greyhounds are usually the star attraction at Highgate Stadium, Goldthorpe, near Barnsley, which has featured on BBC4`s The Flapping Track.

But Lurcherlink, a dog rescue charity, took over to stage a fun racing day to raise cash.

There were races for every ability, from the young and fit, to older dogs, some deaf or unusually nervous, and even a tripod race for hounds that have lost a leg through accident or injury.

All the competitors had been rehomed through Lurcherlink and many had come from dog pounds or been removed from situations that endangered their life.

Lurcherlink is an online community founded by Kaye Goreham-Fitzgerald, in Holmfield, West Yorkshire, with a growing following in Sheffield and North East Derbyshire.

Sheffield musician Richard Hawley has donated signed CDs for online fundraising auctions held at regular intervals.

Lurchers are crossbreeds, often from a greyhound and another working breed of dog. Lurcherlink always has pets for rehoming, with follow-up care and support.
