Driven potty by potholes on road
A RESIDENTIAL street in a Sheffield suburb is in such poor condition it has been patched up hundreds of times by council workmen.
Some 200 potholes have been filled in on Chapel Road, which runs from Burncross to Chapeltown, over the last two years.
Now more than 50 new potholes have been marked for blobs of tarmac.
One fed-up resident said: "The last lot of patching has only just been completed and that was about the fifth time in about two years.
"But the yellow paint man was there just a few days afterwards.
"This time, he has marked up over 50 sections, some as small as six inches square, that need filling.
"As I walked along the road I started to count up the existing patches and gave up at 200. It's a wonder people haven't been pulled up for erratic driving trying to go round the holes on the road.
"The only positive out of this is perhaps it has kept many a local mechanic in business repairing shock absorbers.
"I wonder how much this has cost the council in labour and materials over the last few years. It would probably have not cost much more to resurface it."
He added: "I was wondering if it is a record, approaching 300 patches on one estate road."
Nick Hetherington, Sheffield Council's head of streetscene, said: "These types of repairs are carried out to keep the roads safe until the road can be resurfaced. It is proposed Chapel Road will be resurfaced next year.
"Currently there are resources available for just a limited resurfacing programme and only roads in the worst condition can be resurfaced.
"However, the council has successfully bid for Private Finance Initiative funding, commencing in August 2011, which will improve the standard of the city's roads and footpaths.
"In the short term, the council will continue to inspect and patch roads where necessary to keep them safe for the public."
