Emma's artwork bags £1,000 prize for allotments group
AN ENVIRONMENTAL project working in Sheffield has been given a £1,000 cash boost after a local artist entered a piece of her work on their behalf into a national competition.
LEAF, a food growing project that runs allotment plots so local people can learn to grow and prepare their own fresh food, has been awarded the money after illustrator Emma Metcalfe scooped first prize in O2's Art in the Community contest.
She rose to the challenge to create a piece of art around the theme 'The world is a better place when communities are connected'.
Emma was picked as the winner by a panel of judges after being shortlisted via a public vote in the company's Fargate store, in Sheffield.
The project will use the money to continue promoting healthy eating and fresh food to those in most need, and Emma has also scooped herself a 500 prize.
She said: "I'm very happy to have been chosen as the national winner.
"It is great to be able to support a local community project, and also to gain exposure for my artwork."
Diane Cocker, from LEAF, added: "It's fantastic that Emma is the national winner.
"The prize money means we can realise plans for creative activities on the plots to involve more members of our local community in LEAF's exciting project."
