Famous five grab the honours in the health food 'Oscars'

A SOCIAL centre, two cafés and two restaurants shared honours in Sheffield's inaugural health food 'Oscars', announced last night in a ceremony at Hillsborough stadium.

Nether Edge caf Homemade was named Best Healthy Food Establishment in the Healthy Choices Awards, organised by Sheffield Wildlife Trust.

The venue, run by Hallam University graduates Trudi Colman and Justine Twigge, was praised for its wide range of healthy menu options and healthier cooking methods.

The Burton Street Project, home of the Hillsborough-based foundation, took top honours as Community Champion. More than 1,500 people use the centre each week, many of them with physical or learning disabilities.

The SMaRT Venue in London Road won the prize for high achievement in the use of fairly traded produce – all its products are ethically sourced – while the award for locally sourced food went to Silversmiths in Arundel Street, whose suppliers are all Yorkshire based and 70% in Sheffield.

Nonnas in Ecclesall Road took two awards, as the most breastfeeding-friendly establishment and most inspiring, with overall high achievement in all categories.

Sheffield is one of nine areas to be awarded 'Healthy Town' status, securing more than 4m as part of the initiative.

Match-funding from the city council and NHS Sheffield has taken the total to 9.6m.

Healthy Choices status, awarded for food safety and healthy eating standards, has already been achieved by more than 50 Sheffield venues.
