THE Year of the Dragon will be welcomed in traditional style on Monday as Sheffield’s Chinese community gathers at the City Hall to celebrate with an evening of song and dance.

Food plays a key part in the new year festivities, with the customary family banquet usually including fish, spring rolls, the glutinous nian gao rice cake and dumplings shaped like ancient ingots to symbolise fortune.

Sheffield’s Chinese community will also be able to indulge in a limited edition sorbet of mandarins, representing luck, specially made by award-winning Yee Kwan Ice Creams.

Yee Kwan Chan set up the company two years ago, fusing the flavours of her Chinese heritage with the thrill of the Sheffield ice cream parlour she loved to visit as a child.

Her range of hand-crafted ices won prizes for dairy produce and for innovation at last year’s Deliciously Yorkshire Awards.

Now, from her base at Devonshire Business Park, she is creating the mandarin sorbet especially for Monday’s celebrations.

Other flavours on offer at the City Hall will include double-award-winning black sesame seed ice cream, organic matcha green tea, lychee, symbolising love and romance, and her best-seller, mango and passionfruit ripple.

Ice creams will be on sale at the Chinese New Year celebration, which takes place in the City Hall from 7pm.

lTHE Year of the Dragon heralds a double celebration for city-centre Chinese restaurant Hui Wei… it is one of only two restaurants outside London to earn a place in the top ten of a national poll.

Hui Wei, based in the historic former Glossop Road Baths, has been voted into the honours by customers who recommended the restaurant on website Qype.

Adjudicators took into account the number of reviews, their content and star ratings to come up with the shortlist – with Hui Wei at number six.

It will be celebrating the Chinese New Year on Tuesday with a special banquet featuring live performances of both traditional and classical music. Private dining is available.
