Firm hit with clean-up bill for posters

A COMPANY which put up illegal advertisements in a North Derbyshire town has been hit with a clean-up bill under a new 'get-tough' policy.

Alfreton-based Slimming World has been charged 150 after failing to remove posters attached to roadside railings on Derby Road and outside Coney Green Business Centre in Clay Cross after warnings from North East Derbyshire District Council.

It is the first time the council has billed a company for the cost of cleaning up fly-posting – action taken as part of the council's 'Don't Stand for It' campaign to clamp down on 'enviro-crimes' such as graffiti, littering and fly-tipping.

Businesses and individuals are now being warned they will be hit in the pocket if they post material illegally and do not remove it after being approached by the council.

Coun Nigel Barker, member with responsibility for the environment, said: "We're proud of North East Derbyshire and want to keep it looking its best, for both residents and visitors.

"Flyposting creates an eyesore in the district, making our towns and villages look untidy, and is one of the 'enviro-crimes' that our residents tell us they want us to get tough on.

"If people are unsure of the rules around displaying posters or signs then we would urge them to contact the Council to find out what they need to know."
