Budding chef serves up a winning treat

BUDDING chef Ryan Westney has a winning way with cheese and pears… his interpretation of the two ingredients has won him top prize in a Masterchef competition.

Ryan, of Firth Park, was one of 65 youngsters who took part in the annual competition run by the catering department of Sheaf Training.

After cooking his way to a place in the final, he battled it out against fellow trainees Simone Ducker, Sean Campbell and Holly Kennedy.

Ryan's menu of Welsh rarebit and chutney, followed by chocolate and pear pudding, proved a hit with judges and he walked off with first place, a glass trophy and a set of cook's knives.

Youngsters from schools across the area spend a day a week on vocational training programmes at Sheaf. The Masterchef competition is an annual highlight, with classes for learners aged 14-16 and 16-19.

"It was a fantastic day and the standard was very impressive," said spokeswoman Johanna Bullock-Smith. "All the finalists can be really proud of their achievements."

Ryan is now hoping to pursue a career in catering.
