Food for thought
Phil Nelson is the careers manager at Longley Park Sixth Form College and lives with his wife Helen in south-west Sheffield. Phil has led the drive to encourage more students from the Brightside area to go on to university; the college has just become the first in Sheffield to achieve a new quality standard for careers education
Are you a cook?
I'm an enthusiastic cook. I enjoy hosting dinner parties for friends, preparing modern English and Italian food, in particular seafood and vegetarian dishes.
Any cooking tips?
Use anchovy essence to add extra flavour to fish pies and fishcakes.
What's your favourite dish?
I don't have a favourite as such, I enjoy modern European food.
And a drink to go with it?
I'm very fond of New Zealand wines; Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs are my current favourite. I also have a passion for Belgian beers Leff and Chimay, which go well with a lot of dishes – even desserts!
Your favourite restaurant in the Sheffield area?
This has to be Buon Deli in Broomhill: fine Italian dining. Vincenzo is a fine host and a great cook. I also love Al Carretto at Heeley Bridge, the best garlic bread and mushrooms (with tomato) you'll find anywhere. The late great Derek Dooley had a table there every week – what better recommendation could there be?
And pub?
I've had a 20-year love affair with pubs. My favourites are the Sheaf View in Heeley, the Lescar and Porter Brook in Hunters Bar and the Ranmoor Inn, all of which have a great range of real ales and Belgian beers.
What's the worst meal you've ever had?
In must be a calzone I had at a large national Italian chain in Hunters Bar. It looked and tasted like a deflated bladder!
And the best?
I recently had a meal at the Hambleton Hall Hotel in Rutland, home of Michelin star chef Aaron Patterson. It was just superb.
Your favourite TV cook?
I'm not a great fan of the whole celebrity thing but if I had to choose one it would be Simon Rimmer (Something for the Weekend). I have eaten at his restaurant, Greens in Didsbury, which is a great vegetarian and he's a Liverpool fan like me.
What do you think of Sheffield as a place to eat out?
Pretty good but we've lost a few good restaurants in recent times and gained a lot more chains. I still miss 543 in Ecclesall Road. We still don't have the variety a city of this size deserves.
