Are you a cook?
Yes, I love cooking, especially making up recipes from what we've got left over. It feels especially virtuous and you never get the same thing twice.
Any cooking tips?
Always make stock from left-over bones and then use it as a base for soup. My favourite at the moment is lamb and green lentil.
What's your favourite dish?
Roast lamb (don't forget the stock!), roast potatoes done the way my mother-in-law taught me, carrots and cauliflower cheese made with stilton.
And a drink to go with it?
Australian red wine. Not too much, or I fall asleep.
Your favourite restaurant in the Sheffield area?
The Sheffield Cathedral Archer Project canteen. Breakfast and lunch every day for about a quid; the best sausage casserole in Sheffield; smiley staff, who are mainly volunteers; nice company with the homeless people who come there to eat. And the chef cooks for the conference facilities upstairs, which is great food in a different setting.
And pub?
We've just moved to Ranmoor, so we are getting to know the Ranmoor Inn, which does very impressive food and is really friendly.
What's the worst meal you've ever had?
Pickled onion and turnip curry at the college in Oxford where I was a student. And I lived with a friend who was forever trying out diet recipes. She made a low calorie chocolate pudding that tasted like malted jay cloth. Vile!
And the best?
Steak pie and chips in the maternity ward at the Jessop after I'd given birth to my daughter.
Your favourite TV cook?
I like watching Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall, because he's gentle and thoughtful and seems to take most pleasure in making things that people will really enjoy eating.
What do you think of Sheffield as a place to eat out?
Great. Lots of variety, all close at hand. We've been here nearly six years and we've still got a lot of exploring to do.
