Richard Smith

CARTOONIST Richard Smith recently launched his own business, providing illustrations for publishers and live caricatures at functions.

He lives in Stradbroke and says he is "happily married to Amanda… and her cat".

Are you a cook?

I can cook but working from a recipe. If I start frying vegetables before the meat has started cooking, the veg ends up either in cinders or going cold.

Any cooking tips?

Check your timings, don't burn too many pans and make things to your taste. Also, check your ingredients – my wife once put salt in her pudding mix rather than sugar. The waste disposal sink was blocked for days…

What's your favourite dish?

Smoked back bacon sandwiches, on medium white bread and brown sauce.

And a drink to go with it?

Chilled dry white wine. Weird, I know, but the warm, salty meat goes down a treat with a drop of cool, crisp alcohol.

Your favourite restaurant in the Sheffield area?

The Millstone pub at Hathersage – great home-cooked food and lots of good memories.

And pub?

The Ha Ha bar in the Peace Gardens – a good selection of beverages, good service and a happy atmosphere. One of our closest friends got married at the register office, then took us all over to the Ha Ha afterwards. There were only six of us but it was a lovely afternoon.

What's the worst meal you've ever had?

Back in my home city of Birmingham, a Greek restaurant where the food was undercooked and you could see into the kitchens – they were disgusting. I swore there was a small rodent racing around so we paid and left quickly.

And the best?

One of the best presented meals I ever had was at the Walnut Club in Hathersage, followed by live jazz. Great night out with some of my favourite people. Again the friendly service added to the whole experience.

Your favourite TV cook?

James Martin on a Saturday morning, while tucking into cereal and toast. I like his no-nonsense approach to food and his enthusiasm.

What do you think of Sheffield as a place to eat out?

Sheffield is spoilt for choice, both in the centre of town and its outskirts. Our diverse population allows for some of the most varied menus you can find in the country. And don't underestimate some of the smaller places. For the most amazing pizzas and garlic bread try Peji's here in Stradbroke – quite stunning.
