Fopp store could make return to city
FOR Sheffield music lovers left with a hole in their lives since the demise of Fopp in Division Street, a ray of hope has emerged. The shop, renowned for its eclectic range of its cheap CDs, DVDs and books, may yet return to the city.
HMV, which struck a deal to buy the Fopp brand and initially revive six
of the 105 stores after the firm collapsed two years ago, said this week that it was looking at a new site in Sheffield.
The Division Street outlet – a popular haunt for customers of a
certain age filling the gaps in their music collection – was one of 81
that were shut after receivers were called into the Glasgow-based
business.
Analysts said Fopp had been hit by the rise of supermarkets and online retailers selling CDs and DVDs, as well as the increasing popularity of downloading music.
Music and book retailer HMV later snapped up the brand name.
A spokesman said: "If we can find a suitable location in Sheffield then
we would be interested in opening a Fopp store as it's clear that quite
a bit of affection for the brand remains.
"We're currently looking at a site, but discussions are still at an early stage, and it's too soon to say whether anything will come of this."
