Former miner heads abroad for first time after £1m win

A SOUTH Yorkshire man is celebrating after hitting the £1 million jackpot in a nationwide raffle.

Former miner Ashley Beaumont, aged 63, from Barnsley, says he will use the cash to go abroad for the first time in his life - and a cruise to New York is top of his wish list.

Dad-of-three Ashley has been using a wheelchair for more than 12 years, and had to ask one of his carers to check his Euromillions Millionaire Raffle ticket for him after the draw, as he suffers from poor eyesight.

As she looked at the ticket, she saw that he had only one number from the main draw, but realised he had matched the unique Euromillions raffle number.

Barnsley FC fan Ashley said his carer checked the ticket "over and over again" before telling him he had won.

"I'm really looking forward to sailing into the New York harbour and seeing the view that I have seen so many times on the TV," Ashley said.

Ashley, who has worked in London and the Cotswolds as well as down the pits, added: "It would be really great to be able to look up some old friends and catch up on the past."

Ashley revealed one of his favourite films is Breakfast at Tiffany's, starring Audrey Hepburn, and said he is excited at the prospect of visiting the Fifth Avenue store himself.

He purchased his ticket from Roscoe Premier Express, on Highstone Road, Barnsley.
