Garage transformation is unveiled
ARTISTS Kristan Baggaley and Lucy Coyne are launching the new Edge 10 Studio space in a former car repair workshop at this year's Sheffield Open Studio event.
"The forthcoming weekends at our new venue absolutely demonstrate the spirit of the Sheffield Open Studios, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year," says Lucy Coyne.
"We have participated in the venture from the beginning and our work, ideas and audience have grown along with the annual Sheffield-wide event.
"We have had strong local support for reinventing the local motor repair garage as an art space and create a vibrant new lease of life for the building in our community.
"Instead of the garage being replaced by yet more residential over-development, in setting up our new studio space we have been able to continue to add to the cultural diversity of the city and demonstrate to the public the excellence and variety of what is going on in one of the pockets of artistic endeavour in Sheffield.
"We 'opened up' our home as Poplar Studio for 10 years, transforming domestic life into a calm white art exhibition space for two weekends each year.
"Though extremely successful and enjoyable, we decided that it was the end of an era, the family and the artwork have outgrown the space in the house and a timely opportunity arose when the motor repair garage across the road came up for sale.
"In taking on the old garage, which has been repairing cars for the neighbourhood for over 60 years, we took on the possibility of creating a designated art studio, lots of space and a chance for Kristan's paintings to develop in scale and concept.
"We have been upgrading the rundown building for a year, much to the intrigue of the local residents, and having finally cleared the walls, floor and atmosphere of engine oil and grime are ready to launch."
Edge 10 will feature a fabulous new series of paintings by Kristan Baggaley, an outdoor/indoor environment for showcasing the unusual and beautiful 'flora' jewellery by Lucy Coyne and a live jazz music lunchtime session by Henrik Linnemann and his band to launch his new album.
Dancing Peak to Peak is the second album from the Sheffield-based musician and aptly named considering the relationship between the album artwork, some of the album tracks and the landscape painting of Kristan Baggaley.
Linnemann approached Baggaley to produce the CD artwork for his successful first album, Journeys from Nether Edge, in 2001.
The second album continues the relationship between the two artists, with tracks Padley Gorgeous and Dancing Peak to Peak heralding the Peak District landscape which is the inspiration for the intensely-worked powerful oil landscapes by Baggaley.
Edge 10 Studio at 10 Oakhill Road, Nether Edge will be open this Saturday and Sunday (with live jazz from 1pm-3pm) and next from 11am to 5pm.
