Green roof's cool for pupils

SEVERAL more Sheffield schools will be getting green roofs under the latest round of the government's Building Schools for the Future Programme.

Newfield, Talbot, Yewlands and Silverdale will all be getting 'bio-diverse roofs.' That is, green roofs seeded with wildflowers and perennials to encourage new homes for birds and insects. Over time, the roofs will attract local plant species to create a greater bio-diversity for even more local plants and animals.

Green roofs also help insulate schools – as the weather continues to get hotter, roofs coated in grass and wildflowers keep children cooler in the summer and help to reduce water run-off during heavy rain. They also look rather nice.
