Green highlights for city music festival
ORGANISERS of next month's Tramlines music festival in Sheffield city centre are aiming to make it as green as possible - right down to a solar-powered disco.
"All the best outdoor festivals have adopted a green approach - they have to as they tend to be on farmland where the impact is very obvious," said Sarah Nulty.
"For Tramlines we want to see Sheffield city centre become as close to a greenfield site as we can.
"We've got a whole range of initiatives from sustainable travel options, extra recycling facilities, cheap overnight stays, an emphasis on local suppliers and much more."
Sarah, one of the Tramlines' co-founders and its first sustainability director, added: "You'll feel as if you could almost be on a greenfield site… give or take the toilets and the showers."
The free festival, following last year's success, is being held across the city centre from Friday, July 23 to Sunday. July 25.
Four stages and 50 city centre venues will be used and the headliner on the main stage on Devonshire Green will be Echo and the Bunnymen.
Also on Devonshire Green on the Saturday and Sunday will be a solar-powered headphone disco.
"We really want to build the festival's green credentials," said Sarah.
"Our intent to use as much alternative energy as we can as the festival develops, the solar-powered disco is a great example of this. We've put a plan in place to reduce the impact of the whole festival.
"While we have a long way to go - we have tried to consider everything from the minute the festival-goer leaves their front door, until they return home. Leaving no rubbish, learning a lot more about their role in keeping Sheffield green, and having fun along the way."
The first and most important aim was to encourage people to use sustainable transport by bus, train, tram, foot or cycle, said Sarah. "It's going to be a busy festival - and, like all good festivals, the less cars there are on site the better."
For music fans coming from out of town, student accommodation specialists Unite are opening up halls of residence and charging 30 for a bed for the night.
