Honorary degrees by the dozen

MASTER Cutler Gordon Bridge and best-selling crime writer Lee Child are among 12 luminaries who will receive honorary degrees from Sheffield University next week.

Lee Child, who studied law at the university, based his hugely popular Jack Reacher novels on the exploits of a retired American military policeman.

Gordon Bridge, born and educated in the city, has made substantial contributions to local industry through the course of his career – working for the Tempered Spring Company, Richardson Sheffield and AES Engineering Ltd.

Other recipients include retired Bishop of Sheffield the Rt Rev Jack Nicholls; the retired head of King Edward VII School Michael Lewis; and the university's retired professor of modern history and renowned historian Prof Sir Ian Kershaw.

Top names from the world of medicine include heart surgeon Prof Sir Bruce Keogh and internationally recognised specialist in inflammatory diseases Prof Sir John Savill, a Sheffield University graduate.

Other former graduates returning for their awards include Prof Gillian Bates, a leading authority on Huntington's Disease; Prof Freda Briggs, a child protection expert; and His Excellency Dr Nicholas Liverpool, president of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

Honorary degrees will also go to criminologist Prof Sir Anthony Bottoms and Barton Moenster, chairman of the university's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre.
