Hundreds sign petition against restaurant plan

NEARLY 800 people are urging the council to scrub plans for a former launderette at Nether Green to be converted into a restaurant.

One of the main issues is parking near the premises in Fulwood Road, opposite the Rising Sun pub.

A petition with 795 names also raises concerns about the noise and litter if the application for an unspecified type of restaurant is granted.

Protesters have won the backing of city planners, who have no objection to the principle of the building being used as a restaurant, but agree that the lack of off-street parking is a stumbling block.

"It is noted that the site is on a bus route," says a council report. "However, it is anticipated that a significant proportion of customers would be likely to travel by car, and all parking demand would have to be accommodated on street."

Planners say residents are complaining that they have difficulty finding parking spots near their homes, a problem they say has got worse since a Tesco Express and the Panahar restaurant opened.

In addition, the question of extraction equipment to deal with smells has not yet been addressed to the satisfaction of planners.

Councillors will discuss the situation on Tuesday. One letter has been received supporting the proposal if the restaurant offers something different, such as Italian, French of English food.
