Irish celebrations in Sheffield
News: Sheffield Telegraph online 24-hours a day.
SHEFFIELD celebrates St Patrick’s Day this weekend with a white tent and a green tent in the city centre.
The familiar white marquee has gone up in Fargate and, sponsored by Guinness, will host live music and coverage of 6 Nations Rugby and the Cheltenham Festival. Sunday, St Patrick’s Day, will feature Limerick band Celtic Fling and open mic sessions by local musicians. The ‘Original Big White Tent’ is on the precinct until Sunday.
The Green Tent is on Devonshire Green from tomorrow (Friday) until Sunday and is being run by staff at The Green Room in Devonshire Street.
Bands will play all weekend, with Sunday designated an Irish music day.
The city’s Irish community is holding events across the city.
For the past four years, the Sheffield Irish Association Festival has included a parade through the city centre, but not this year.
Dave Oldroyd, from the association, said: “We have previously secured funding which has covered the cost of the festivals and parades. We have not secured funding as in past years, we are organising a festival as usual, but due to not securing funding we are unable to organise a parade this year.”
There are believed to be around 50,000 Sheffielders with an Irish parent or grandparent, 10% of the city’s population.
