John Savident in HMS Pinafore - VIDEO

IS that Weatherfield's Fred Elliot raising the roof in a Gilbert & Sullivan classic, I say?

John Savident, best known to millions as Coronation Street butcher Fred Elliot, is at The Lyceum all this week as you've never seen him before.

The star is taking to the stage surrounded by sailors and singing his heart out at sea aboard HMS Pinafore.

Sheffield's Lyceum is the only venue in the north of England to host the show on its current UK tour and it is John's first return to the city's theatres since appearing in Hobson's Choice at the Crucible in 2007.

Leaving The Rovers Return far behind for this production of HMS Pinafore, the actor has set sail for action in 1805 and taken on a distinct Dickensian look.

The storyline is not a million miles from soapland as his character Sir Joseph Porter hunts for a wife – no matter what.

The opera may have been penned decades before anyone first thought of Coronation Street but soap fans will feel very at home with its battles for greater social standing, simmering secrets and star-crossed lovers.
