Knee disability Meron on the pull to toast new job
PULLING pints is the order of the day for a Sheffield man who has forged a new career as a barman, a year after his knee disability forced him to resign from his old job.
Meron Heruy, aged 29, from Wincobank, had to leave his job in a fast food restaurant because standing still behind the serving counter made his condition worse, leaving him in pain.
Now he's working as a bar assistant at Travelodge's Sheffield Central hotel, close to Ponds Forge.
He said he loves his new job for its variety, and because he is able to chat to customers while taking their orders.
"I wanted to work, keep active and use my brain, and that's what I am now doing," said Meron, "This job is a complete change from what I have done in the past, but I am relishing the challenges every day."
Meron found his job through employment agency Remploy, which provides support for people experiencing problems finding work.
It helped Meron write a new CV, assisted him with his search for a job and trained him in interview techniques.
Meron said: "I never considered working in a hotel until Remploy suggested it. Being out of work for a year sapped me of my self-confidence, and rebuilding this was the key to unlocking everything for me."
