The heat was on for budding chefs at High Green who took part in a national cookery challenge.

Pupils from Greengate Lane Primary School were among 36,000 youngsters across the country who swapped pens for pans in the BIG Cookathon 2013.

The event, organised by cooking club network Let’s Get Cooking, aimed to get as many people as possible cooking a healthy dish. And at High Green more than 100 children, parents and staff joined in to help cook a healthy alternative to the popular Indian take-away.

Following recipes for chicken or veggie korma, they cooked up delicious – and healthy food – and then tucked in to share the results.

Paul Cross, deputy head, said: “Learning how to cook healthy meals from scratch is so important. Cooking is a life skill that they’ll take with them into adulthood, and learning how to make meals that are not just healthy, but tasty too, is a big part of that.”

He added: “The BIG Cookathon is a really good opportunity to get families cooking together. You don’t need to be a master chef to enjoy it – everyone can relate to food!”

Since its launch six years ago, Let’s Get Cooking has spawned clubs all over the country and encouraging members to make healthy cooking part of their everyday lives.

Cookathon results will be announced in May.
