Martyn Joseph & Stewart Henderson, The acclaimed singer-songwriter teams up with the poet, broadcaster and writer on their ‘Because We Still Can’ tour, Sheffield Cathedral, Friday, 7.30pm (£16). Worrall Folk and Ale Festival, Lashings of music, real ale from local brewers and the famous Worrall Burgers in the grounds of Worrall Memorial Hall, Towngate Road. Kicks off on Friday at 7.30pm with Jack’s Rake, Vic Shepherd and John Bowden and Richard Brown, on Saturday at 2pm trio Skyhook are the headliners, plus an open mic session, followed by a family ceilidh at 7pm. Edale Folk Festival, Award-winning musicians, writers and crafts people join a new festival. Folk singer Bella Hardy, recently named Best Original Songwriter in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards returns to the home stage with her musical trio and they’ll be joined by other local talent including Bamford-grown Robin Beatty’s Old Dance School. National names include The Destroyers, Kris Drever & Eamonn Coyne, Katriona Gilmore & Jamie Roberts and Jack McNeill. Edale writer Mark Wallington will preview his book about his travels round the UK’s Open Mic Nights and Kathy Towers, awarded the 2011 Seamus Heaney prize for poetry, will be reading from her work. Former Derbyshire Poet Laureate River Wolton leads a writing workshop as well as sharing the stage with Sheffield singing trio the Top Shelalas. “The festival is designed to be a fun weekend where families can come and take part in music workshops or just relax while others provide the entertainment,” says organiser Sarah Eldridge. “With art and crafts as well as excellent music, plus the opportunity to walk in the Peak District, what more could anyone ask?” Any profit goes to a school in Kenya with links with Hope Valley School and charity Freedom From Torture.
